Whether they are twins or different ages, if you have two young children, double strollers make it easier to take them places. However, with so many strollers to choose from, it may be hard to pick one that will be the best for you. Here are 5 quick areas on what to focus on, to make sure you get the best for your kids.
There are two styles of double strollers: side-by-side and inline. When comparing the features, one style does have more advantages for your children.
With side-by-side strollers, both children can see each other and interact. They also have the same view at the same time. One child’s view is not blocked by the other child and by the stroller in front of them. However, since they are wider, it is harder to get side-by-side strollers through narrow spaces like doors.
The inline strollers generally have two seats with one in front of the other. Although, some can be arranged to have the seats back-to-back or facing, and some have a stand and ride area in the back. Besides one child’s view being blocked, the inline styles have other features that are not the same for both children. First, the sunshades do not always offer the same amount of protection for both children. Then, there are features that are only available to one child, such as adjustable leg rests, food trays, and cup holders and features such as reclining seats that recline further for one child. Finally, because of their length, inline strollers are harder to turn and maneuver.
Car Seat Frame Stroller or Double Stroller
When babies are very young, it is really convenient to be able to take the car seat out of the car and attach it to a frame stroller without waking your baby. However, most strollers cannot handle two car seats. So, if you have twins, you need to make sure that you have a double stroller that can handle two car seats. As your children get over six months, you can get a better double stroller. If your children are different ages, you can start with the regular double stroller that can handle one car seat and an older child or two older children.
Strollers come with a variety of wheel choices. Some have two wheels in the back and one in the front. Some have two wheels in the back and two in the front. Others have two wheels in the back and two double wheels in the front. Despite how it might seem, the three wheel versions are best because the more wheels there are, the more chances there are that a wheel will get stuck on a rough spot. The single front wheel can either be fixed or swivel. You may also want to look at strollers with air-filled wheels. Make sure the rear wheels lock.
There are a few strollers that offer extra features that some parents might find useful. Some strollers can be converted so that you can attach them to a bicycle or change the wheels to runners and go cross country skiing. If the stroller is going to be used for longer periods, you will want to be sure the stroller has a good sunshade and allows the seats to recline enough that your children can sleep comfortably. In addition, you will want enough storage and pockets for items you will take with you and trays and cup holders for snacks. You will also want to check how easily it moves, especially with a load, and how tight the turning radius is. There are even strollers that come with a suspension system for a smoother ride. How easily and compactly the stroller folds up is one more consideration.
First, read the manufacturer’s restrictions on minimum and maximum weights for each stroller, and be sure to follow them. Make sure that neither of your children will outgrow a stroller too soon. Look for good head and neck support. See if the stroller has been tested and approved by the JPMA. Then search the make and model online to see if it has been recalled.
Many times price is a consideration, but buying a cheap double stroller could make your excursions less fun and reduce the resell value. So try to find a way to get the double stroller that is best for your family.
